Friends of the Glenelg River - New walking trail
Friends of the Glenelg River have completed a new walking trail to the junction of the Glenelg and Wannon Rivers.
The project was made possible by adjacent landholder, Mr Peter Leake, who has worked with the rellevent authorities to fence-off the crown frontage and allow passage to this historic site.
The rivers were a traditional natural boundary for two different lots of early inhabitants, firstly three aboriginal language groups being, the Jardwadjali where the trail is located, the Buandig across the Glenelg river to the west and the Dhauwurd Wurrrung (modern day decendants are now Gunditjmari) south of the Wannon. It was later to also be the boundary of property runs of the first European squatters being Connells (Henty Brothers), Sprinbank (McPherson)) and Sandford ((Henty Brothers) respectively.
The walk is roughly 3.7km return trip over undulating river bank on a slashed track so it is recommended for the fitter walkers with good walking shoes.
A picnic table and wonderful views greets you on arrival at the junction, so pack a lunch and enjoy the serenity of the rivers or have a fish if so desired with trout and redfin the most likely catch.
